Situated in the heart of the French breeding centers, Deauville was founded in 1862 by the Duke de Morny and the feature race of the season at the track bears his name. The turf track features a straight mile, the only one in France, as well as a round oval track with an all-weather loop on the inside. Although generally very fair, it is rare to see the runners come up the middle of the straight track and most races are won by horses who come to the stands side rail. In big field handicaps, the horses will often split into 2 groups and towards the end of the season, when the ground becomes more testing, many of the jockeys will explore all areas of the track in search of better ground, but the stats confirm that it still favors horses who follow the stands rail (71% raced within 3 widths of the stands rail in 2020).
On the round track, there is a slight draw bias towards the lower numbered stalls, but it is not as significant as at other French tracks and the wider bend and home straight allows for fewer hard luck stories. On the all-weather loop, the tight bends and shorter straights tend to favour more prominent racers and in races with 7 or more runners, stalls 3-6 is the ideal draw. In fact, stall 1 has a strike rate of less than 4% on the all-weather course.
The focus of the season at Deauville is the summer carnival, which runs from the end of July to September and features a series of high-profile Group 1 races.
