Form:

Limier D'Arthel's form in France

Notes:

AQPS bred. Fair debut when 4th in AQPS Flat race at LIgnieres in March. Settled towards rear of 7-runner field. Made brief headway between runners around final turn but didn't have the pace to challenge, kept on. Winner had first run after being sent forwards at halfway (Lincoln du Seuil, subsequently sold to join Willie Mullins). Steadily run first mile did not help his chances. Sent off 19.0 PMU suggesting connections felt the run was needed. Winner on 2nd start at Moulins in April, tracking leader before kicking clear with 2-furlongs to go, running out a 9-length winner. Lavriot Star (2nd) won next time at Montlucon to boost the form. Time was 3-seconds slower than the Fillies race over the same course and distance, won by La Ligne Rouge.

Adam's thoughts:

The closing stages of the Prix Garage Monpied at Lignieres

One of the quieter pieces of business done by the JP McManus this summer, but a quality purchase with the future in mind. Limier D'Arthel has run in a pair of AQPS Flat races (3YO only) and both of them have been steadily run in the early stages. At Lignieres it was asking a lot for him to come through the field and make ground in a race that developed into a sprint, especially on his debut, but he still ran a perfectly respectable race. The winner caught the headlines and was soon sold to join Willie Mullins, but on the day, Lincoln du Seuil received a clever ride from Augustin Madamet, who realised that he needed to react to the sedate early gallop and sent his mount forwards. At odds of 2.1 PMU, it was clear that this was the day for Mickael Seror's charge and so we need to make allowances for that. As a result, the 4th placed finish of Limier D'Arthel, 5-lengths behind the winner, was a very solid beginning.

Having learned from that debut run, he was ideally placed to take advantage on his 2nd start at Moulins, but having got to the front, it was his performance in the final 400 metres that really caught the eye. When shaken up by Eddy Hardouin, he responded instantly and pulled readily clear of Lavriot Star, who went on to win at Montlucon next time when getting the better of Lutece D'Arthel, a stablemate of Limier D'Arthel at Emmanuel Clayeux's. In a steadily run race, it was good to see him fully extend to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field in such decisive fashion.

He's bred to be a Chaser and will certainly stay further in time, but the fact that he has shown himself to possess the necessary speed to win over 12-furlongs bodes well and he ought to pick up a Juvenile hurdle this season. I don't like using clichés, but it is probably fair to say that "anything he does over hurdles will be a bonus". Whilst any AQPS bred horse sent to this yard in these colours will evoke memories of Defi du Seuil, the likelihood is that Limier D'Arthel will prove to be a longer term project than Defi du Seuil was, but either way he is a very promising horse to look forwards to in the years to come.
