Larinka winning the Prix de la Chauvelais at Saumur, France

Racing careers can begin in all kinds of places. Impose Toi will run with a live chance in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham this week and it's exactly 3-years to the day since he made an impressive winning debut in an AQPS Flat race at Saumur. Lightning may not strike twice and after just 1 run it is hard to draw too many conclusions from the form of Larinka. However, she was equally impressive when winning her debut at Saumur on Sunday and she looks to be one of the more exciting AQPS debutantes that we have seen so far in 2025. Here are my notes on yesterday's race and Daniela Mele's impressive Martinborough filly.

Officially the ground was Good to Soft, but visually looked worse than that.

A debut win for Larinka (Mele). She is a Martinborough filly. Her Dam was a 16-race maiden (Madrika - Kadalko) but she has now produced 4 winners, most notably Up To You, who was a Listed winner at Auteuil. Bounced out to lead and was able to dictate throughout. She was still on the bridle as they began to turn for home and had most of the others working hard, coming clear to win by 6-lengths in the straight.

Katy des Genievres (2nd) sat behind the pace, but kicked on under pressure from the 4-furlong point. She was no match for the winner, but has finished 6-lengths ahead of the rest of the field. She had finished 3rd in an AQPS race here in November and confirmed the form with Kliffhanger (3rd) here. She fell on her hurdles debut at Angers before Christmas, but may well be worth another go and should find a race in the provinces. *Wears a Hood and Tongue-Tie.

Loreto (4th) was the 2nd string of the Mele horses based on the jockey bookings, but ran to a similar level that she had shown when 5th at Argentan in August. She may improve for the run and it was clearly difficult to make up ground from the rear on this surface. Though she is not as promising as her stablemate.

Lys de Thaix (5th) had finished 3rd here last month and having raced in Mid-Division, he was probably further back than ideal. He has kept on, without ever looking like challenging the winner.

Luneo Allen (7th) is a well-bred Tunis gelding owned by Walter Connors. He sat wide, 3-lengths off the pace for much of the race, but faded from the home turn and ran around under pressure. Should improve for Donatien Sourdeau de Beauregard after this debut, perhaps on better ground.
